|A New Cloak For Matiu: The restoration of an island ecology
|This book has been published by the Lower Hutt Branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Society of New Zealand Inc, with the aim of recording a pioneer revegetation project on a very visible island in Wellington Harbour enabling others to learn from it. The book marks thirty years restoration on Matiu/Somes, and has allowed memories of people involved at the start of the project to be captured, along with those of the many individuals who have contributed so enthusiastically over the years.
With 110,000 native plants and the eradication of pests, the established forest has become the habitat for many re-introduced native fauna not seen on the island for a long time – among them tuatara, kakariki, North Island robin, Cook Strait giant weta, Wellington tree weta, skinks and geko – a place where the public can see them in the wild. Many schools board the East by West ferry to explore Matiu/Somes when visiting Wellington.
How all this came about is a story well worth telling: one that demonstrates the value of ecological restoration, and of volunteer commitment.
